This O-ring seals the differential mechanism, preventing lubricant leakage between the housing and the rotating carrier assembly. It sits in the groove machined into the differential housing face, where it compresses against the mating cover to maintain a closed hydraulic circuit for the gear oil. A failed or hardened O-ring allows oil to weep past the joint, which can lead to reduced lubrication pressure inside the differential and eventual bearing damage. The original material formulation matches the housing's groove geometry and the oil-contact environment, so the seal maintains its cross-section under compression without extruding. On reinstall, clean the groove thoroughly and apply a light coat of assembly lubricant to prevent the O-ring from rolling during cover installation.
