This seal sits on the rear axle housing, preventing lubricant leakage between the rotating shaft and the stationary housing. It maintains a positive seal around the axle shaft, keeping transmission or final-drive oil contained and excluding dirt and moisture from the bearing cavity. A worn or hardened seal allows oil to weep past the shaft, which can lead to bearing contamination and reduced lubricant level in the differential housing. The seal is an original-manufacturer component, molded to the same cross-section and lip geometry as the part originally fitted to the axle, so it seats correctly in the housing bore without modification. On installation, inspect the shaft contact surface for scoring and apply a light coat of oil to the seal lip before pressing it into the bore.
