This O-ring seals the interface between the rear axle housing and the differential carrier, preventing lubricant leakage from the final-drive cavity. It sits in a machined groove on the axle housing flange and compresses against the mating face of the carrier when the assembly is bolted together. A degraded or hardened O-ring allows gear oil to weep past the joint, which can lead to low lubricant level and accelerated wear of the ring-and-pinion set. The manufacturer supplies this seal as a direct replacement for the original component, maintaining the same cross-section and groove-fill ratio that the housing was designed for. On reinstallation, clean both sealing surfaces and verify the O-ring is seated fully in its groove before torquing the housing bolts to specification.
