This fuel pump delivers diesel from the tank to the injection system at the pressure and flow rate required for engine operation. It is mounted on the engine block and driven by the camshaft or an intermediate gear; its internal pumping mechanism maintains a steady supply to the high-pressure injection pump. A worn pump produces symptoms such as hard starting, low power, or erratic idle as fuel delivery drops below demand.
