This O-ring seals the interface between the injection pump housing and the engine block, preventing fuel leakage and maintaining system pressure. It sits in the groove on the pump mounting face and compresses when the pump is bolted into place. A degraded or hardened O-ring allows air ingress, which causes hard starting and erratic idle, or fuel weepage that attracts dirt. The original-spec rubber compound matches the housing's groove depth and width, so the seal compresses to the correct height without over-squeezing or rolling out of the groove. On reinstallation, clean the groove and lubricate the O-ring lightly with clean engine oil before seating.
