This o-ring seals the differential housing against fluid leakage, maintaining the correct lubricant level for the gear set and bearings. It sits in the groove between the differential carrier and the housing, where it prevents oil from migrating into the axle tubes or escaping to the exterior. A degraded or compressed o-ring allows oil seepage, which can lead to insufficient lubrication of the differential gears and eventual bearing failure. This original part is molded to the same cross-section and durometer as the factory seal, so it fills the groove without being over-compressed when the housing is torqued to specification.
