It sits in a machined groove on the axle housing, preventing axial movement of the bearing outer race under load. A loose or incorrectly seated ring allows bearing migration, which leads to wheel-end play and accelerated tire wear. This component is manufactured to the original groove dimensions so that it seats fully without deformation. On installation, ensure the ring is fully compressed into the groove and that no gap remains between the ring and the housing shoulder.
