This viscous clutch drive controls the engagement speed of the radiator cooling fan based on the temperature of the air passing through the radiator core. It is mounted on the fan drive hub and uses a silicone fluid coupling to modulate fan speed, reducing parasitic power loss when full cooling airflow is not required. A failed clutch will not lock up properly, causing the fan to spin slower than needed, which can lead to elevated coolant and charge-air temperatures under load. The original assembly matches the bolt pattern and pilot diameter of the factory fan hub, so no adapter or shimming is needed during replacement. On reinstall, ensure the fan blades are not contacting the shroud and torque the mounting bolts to specification.
