A clogged filter restricts oil flow, which can cause the bypass valve to open and send unfiltered oil through the engine, accelerating bearing wear. On installation, lubricate the gasket face with clean oil and tighten the housing by hand until the gasket contacts the head, then advance an additional three-quarters of a turn.
