A clogged filter restricts oil flow, which can cause the bypass valve to open and allow unfiltered oil to reach critical bearing surfaces. The manufacturer machines the filter's sealing gasket to match the housing's mounting face, ensuring the bypass valve seats correctly at the specified cracking pressure. When reinstalling, lubricate the gasket with clean oil and tighten the filter by hand until the gasket contacts the housing, then give an additional three-quarter turn.
