A degraded or improperly seated O-ring allows oil to weep past the joint, which can lead to low fluid level, reduced lubrication to gears and bearings, and eventual transmission damage. The original part is manufactured to the same cross-section and durometer as the factory seal, so it fills the groove correctly without requiring additional sealant. On reinstall, clean the groove thoroughly and ensure the O-ring is not twisted before tightening the cover bolts.
