It prevents lubricant leakage and keeps contaminants out of the bearing and gear cavity. A degraded or pinched O-ring allows oil seepage past the joint, which can lead to low lubricant level and accelerated wear on the internal differential and planetary gears. The ring is molded to the original cross-section and hardness specification, matching the seal groove geometry so that the housing halves compress it evenly when torqued to spec. On reinstallation, clean the groove thoroughly and inspect the mating surfaces for burrs before fitting the new ring.
