It is installed at the point where the axle or gearbox output passes through the housing wall, maintaining a sealed boundary between the internal oil bath and the external environment. A worn or hardened seal allows lubricant to weep past the lip, which can lead to reduced oil level in the final drive and accelerated gear or bearing wear. The seal lip is designed to match the original shaft surface finish and housing bore tolerance, so no additional shimming or adapter is needed during replacement. On installation, ensure the seal lip faces the lubricant side and that the housing bore is clean and free of burrs.
