This rear axle seal ring is a lip-type seal that prevents lubricant leakage from the final drive housing and keeps contaminants out of the bearing cavity. It presses into the axle housing and rides on the rotating shaft, maintaining a fluid-tight barrier under normal operating pressures. A worn or hardened seal allows oil to weep past the lip, which can lead to bearing starvation and eventual axle failure. As an original-manufacturer component, the seal is molded to the same rubber-compound durometer and lip geometry as the part fitted during assembly, so it seats correctly in the housing bore without requiring shimming or adapters. On installation, ensure the sealing lip faces the lubricant reservoir and that the housing bore is clean and free of burrs.
