Case IH 10002 – ATC (Advanced Tractor Control): Front suspension rod Side Valve solenoid is open circuit or shorted to ground.
Issue description
The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid valve that controls hydraulic oil flow to the rod side of the front suspension cylinders. The system sees either a broken connection (open circuit) or a wire touching the chassis/ground (shorted to ground).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Magnum
- Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
- Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 180-260 CVX)
- Steiger
- Maxxum series (MXM, MXU)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front suspension control block, paying special attention to areas near the bottom of the fan shroud or along the frame for chafing and damage.
Disconnect the plug at the rod side solenoid valve and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins (infinite resistance/OL indicates an open circuit internal to the coil).
Check for continuity between the power pin and the tractor chassis (continuity indicates the circuit is shorted to ground).
Turn the key ON and verify that the controller is sending the appropriate reference voltage to the connector.
Check the main fuses supplying the suspension controller (e.g., 12VM, 12VF1, 12VF3).
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Lower the front suspension completely or support the front frame securely. Turn off the engine and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the suspension accumulators and control block.
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the front suspension control block, which is typically mounted near the front axle accumulators.
Identify the Solenoid
The block contains two main PWM solenoid valves: one for the piston side and one for the rod side. Identify the rod side valve based on the hydraulic lines routing to the rod end of the suspension cylinders.
Remove the Faulty Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical harness. Unscrew the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge, or unthread the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole unit.
Install the New Part
Install the new solenoid coil/valve cartridge. Torque to OEM specifications and reattach the electrical connector.
Calibrate the Suspension
Start the tractor and allow hydraulic pressure to build. You must perform a front axle suspension calibration using the tractor's display monitor or an electronic service tool so the controller can relearn the travel range and pressure relief settings (which should reach approx. 140 bar during calibration).
