Case IH 10004 – Transmission Controller (TCU) or Front Suspension Controller: Front Suspension Position sensor out of Range High Error

The front suspension position sensor (potentiometer) is sending a voltage signal back to the controller that exceeds the maximum expected limit (typically near or above 5V). This condition is usually caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, an open ground circuit, a broken/seized mechanical linkage forcing the sensor past its limit, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visual Inspection of Linkage: Locate the position sensor above the front axle. Check the mechanical linkage arm connected to the sensor. It is common for the sensor shaft to seize and break off, causing the sensor to lose its reference position.

   Wiring and Connector Check: Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and harness for corrosion, pinched wires, or damage. Look specifically for a short to a 5V/12V power source or a broken ground wire.

   Voltage Test: Using a multimeter, back-probe the sensor connector. The signal voltage should be within the normal operating range (typically between 0.5V and 4.5V). If it reads 5V or higher, the sensor is internally shorted or the wiring is compromised.

   Check Pressure Sensors: Verify that the suspension isn't physically stuck in an over-extended position. Check the rod and piston side pressure sensors (via the cab monitor) to ensure they are reading correctly, as failed pressure sensors can prevent the suspension from leveling, indirectly causing position errors.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface. If possible, lower the front suspension fully to relieve pressure, and turn off the engine.

   Removal

   Locate the front axle position sensor mounted on the bracket above the front axle. Disconnect the electrical connector.

   Dismount

   Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket and detach the mechanical linkage arm.

   Installation

   Install the new position sensor and reattach the linkage arm. Secure the mounting bolts and plug in the electrical connector.

   Calibration

   Perform a front suspension calibration using the tractor's AFS Pro monitor or a dealer service tool. (Note: For the calibration to complete successfully, the system usually requires both the rod and piston pressure sensors to read 0 psi immediately after the axle is fully lowered at the start of the process).
