1003

Case IH 1003 – Hitch Control / Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Speed sensor error

Issue description

Speed difference between the radar sensor (ground speed) and the transmission output speed sensor is too high, or the signal is entirely lost.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Farmall Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify Sensor Connections: Check the wiring harnesses and connectors for both the transmission output speed sensor and the radar sensor (ground speed sensor). Look for disconnected plugs, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  2. Check for Shorts/Opens: Inspect the wiring circuit for open circuits or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Compare Sensor Data: Since the error often triggers when the speed difference between the radar sensor and transmission output speed sensor is too high, verify if one sensor is reading erratically while the other is stable.

  4. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes like 1002 (Disconnected radar) or 1004 (Wheel rotation sensor/Transmission output speed sensor - signal too high), which can help isolate which specific sensor is failing.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Faulty Sensor

Identify whether the transmission output speed sensor (usually located on the transmission housing/rear axle) or the radar sensor (usually mounted under the cab or chassis facing the ground) is the culprit.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt(s) or unthread the sensor from its mounting port.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new sensor into the housing or bracket. If it is a transmission sensor, ensure any O-rings are lubricated and seated properly. Tighten to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the wiring harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes. Test drive the tractor to ensure the speed readout is accurate and the hitch/draft control systems operate without throwing the 1003 code.
