Case IH 1003 – Hitch Controller / EDC (Electronic Draft Control): Open or Short to Ground raise hitch valve coil circuit failure

The controller has detected that the electrical circuit operating the solenoid responsible for raising the rear hitch is either broken (open) or has a short circuit to ground.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the raise hitch valve coil for any signs of chafing, breaks, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

   Disconnect the harness at the raise hitch solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

   Use a multimeter to test the raise hitch valve coil itself for an internal open circuit or an internal short to ground.

   Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to monitor the EDC Low Side Driver and verify if the fault is active or stored.

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on hard, level ground. Turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and remove the key. Put blocks in front of and behind the wheels.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the hitch control valve block, typically mounted at the rear of the tractor near the hitch assembly. Identify the specific solenoid coil responsible for the 'raise' function.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the raise hitch valve coil.

   Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness and secure it away from pinch points.

   Coil Replacement (If Applicable)

   If the wiring is intact but the coil failed the multimeter test (open or shorted internally), remove the retaining nut or clip holding the coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the faulty coil off the valve stem.

   Install New Part

   Slide the new raise hitch valve coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new coil. Turn the key on and use your diagnostic scan tool to clear fault code 1003.

   Test Operation

   Operate the hitch controls to ensure the hitch raises properly and verify that the fault code does not return.
