Case IH 1004 – Electronic Draft Control (EDC) module or Transmission / Central Control Unit (CCM): Wheel speed sensor - signal too high

The system sets this code when the frequency or voltage signal returning from the wheel speed sensor exceeds the maximum expected operational threshold (such as detecting a speed greater than 60 km/h, which is abnormal for these machines).

   Inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness and connector for chafed wires, corrosion, or a short to power.

   Check if the sensor is loose. A loose sensor vibrating against the housing or an incorrect air gap can cause erratic, high-frequency signal spikes.

   Using a multimeter, verify the 5V reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector.

   Remove the sensor and inspect the tone ring/gear inside the housing for debris, metal shavings on the magnetic tip, or damage.

   Safely park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate the wheel speed sensor.

   Depending on the model, it is typically mounted on the transmission housing, final drive, or axle housing.

   Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor base to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission or axle housing.

   Remove the retaining bolt and carefully twist and pull the sensor out of its bore.

   Wipe away any metal shavings from the bore and inspect the internal tone ring.

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new wheel speed sensor with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid.

   Insert the new sensor into the bore, ensuring it seats fully without being forced.

   Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 1004 fault code, then test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return and the speedometer reads accurately.
