Case IH 1004 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Hydraulic Oil Filter Restricted
Issue description
The differential pressure across the hydraulic oil filter exceeds the allowable limit (typically around 425 kPa / 62 psi), causing the filter restriction switch to close.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- SR175
Check the cause
Verify Fluid Temperature: Ensure the hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature. Cold hydraulic oil is highly viscous and can cause a false restriction warning.
Inspect the Sensor/Wiring: Check the hydraulic oil filter restriction switch (sensor) and its wiring harness. Look for a short to ground or damaged wires that might falsely signal a closed switch.
Fluid Inspection: Check the hydraulic oil level and inspect the fluid for severe degradation, water intrusion, or heavy particulate contamination that could prematurely clog a filter.
Repair steps
Park and shut off machine
Park the machine on a level surface, lower all hydraulic attachments to the ground, and shut off the engine.
Relieve pressure
Relieve any residual pressure in the hydraulic system.
Locate filter
Locate the hydraulic oil filter assembly.
Place catch pan
Place a catch pan beneath the filter housing to catch spilled oil.
Remove and inspect filter
Unscrew and remove the restricted hydraulic oil filter. Inspect the old filter for excessive metal shavings, which could indicate a failing hydraulic pump.
Clean housing base
Clean the filter housing base to ensure a proper seal.
Lubricate gasket
Apply a light film of clean hydraulic oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter.
Install new filter
Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket makes contact with the base, then tighten according to the manufacturer's specifications (usually 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn further).
Top off hydraulic oil
Check the hydraulic reservoir dipstick/sight glass and top off the hydraulic oil as needed to replace what was lost in the filter.
Verify repair
Start the engine, allow the oil to warm up, and verify that the 1004 fault code clears and that there are no leaks around the new filter.
