Case IH 1005 – Hitch Controller (TCU / EDC): Lower hitch valve coils - open or short to ground

This code indicates a circuit failure where the electrical connection to the lower hitch valve coil has either been broken (open circuit) or the voltage is being routed directly to the chassis ground (short to ground).

   Battery Reset: Disconnect the tractor's battery for a short period to reset the electronic control systems. Note that this may not clear hard codes on all models, but it is a recommended preliminary step.

   Scan Tool Verification: Use a specialized diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest) to confirm the code is active and not a stored historical code.

   Connector Inspection: Locate the lower hitch valve coil on the rear hydraulic valve block. Disconnect the harness and ensure the connectors are not damaged, the pins are in the correct position, and the fit is tight. Look for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

   Wiring Harness Continuity: Test the wiring harness between the Hitch Controller (TCU/EDC) and the valve coil for continuity. Check for any chafing or bare wires touching the tractor frame (which would cause the "short to ground").

   Coil Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the lower hitch valve coil. If the reading shows an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the coil itself has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the hitch control valve block, typically located at the rear of the tractor near the hitch assembly. Identify the specific solenoid designated for the "Lower" function.

   Unplug the electrical connector from the lower hitch valve coil.

   Remove the retaining nut or snap-ring holding the coil onto the hydraulic valve stem. Slide the faulty coil off the cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the valve cartridge to replace the coil).

   Slide the replacement coil over the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.
