Case IH 10053 – CCM (Chassis Control Module): Piston side solenoid short to VBatt
Issue description
The electrical circuit controlling the piston side (raise) hydraulic valve solenoid is unexpectedly receiving battery voltage (VBatt), which is almost always caused by a wiring harness short-circuit or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Coil Resistance Test: Disconnect the solenoid connector and measure the resistance of the solenoid coil between its cavities (terminals) with the multimeter set to Ohms (Ω). If the resistance is outside of the specified values for the ambient temperature (e.g., reading close to 0 Ω), the coil is internally shorted.
Harness Short-to-Voltage Test: With the solenoid disconnected and the tractor key ON (engine off), measure the voltage on the signal wire of the harness connector. If it reads 12V when the function is not being commanded, the harness is shorted to battery power.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness routing from the CCM to the valve block for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could bridge the solenoid circuit to a 12V source.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery
Ensure safety and prevent further electrical damage.
Locate the hydraulic control valve block
Identify the piston side (raise) solenoid on the chassis.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid
Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bridging.
Repair the wiring harness if shorted to VBatt
Based on your diagnostic checks, trace the harness back to the CCM. Repair the damaged wire insulation or splice in a new section of wire, ensuring it is properly sealed and loomed.
Remove the faulty solenoid coil
If the harness tests fine but the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut on the end of the solenoid valve and slide the faulty coil off the valve cartridge.
Install the new solenoid coil
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the cartridge and tighten the retaining nut.
Reconnect components and clear fault codes
Reconnect the electrical connector, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes from the CCM using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a service tool.
Test the hydraulic function
Test the raise/lower hydraulic function to verify the repair.
