Case IH 10056 – CCM (Chassis Control Module / Cab Control Module): Piston lockout solenoid open circuit / short to GND

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the lockout solenoid on the Suspended Front Axle (SFA) is either broken (open circuit) or shorted to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 170
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225
  • Puma 240 CVT/PowerDrive
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Optum series

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness between the CCM and the lower lockout solenoid for an open circuit or a short to ground. Look for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or damage near the front axle suspension block.

  2. Inspect the electrical connectors at the solenoid (often utilizing wire colors like Light Brown/TN on circuits 3285/3286) for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  3. Ensure the connectors for the upper (rod) lockout solenoid and the lower (piston) lockout solenoid have not been accidentally swapped during previous maintenance.

  4. Perform a current draw test on the solenoid coil. The CCM expects a current of 30 to 46 mA when the SFA lower/piston lockout solenoid is active.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the Suspended Front Axle (SFA) control valve block, which houses the lockout solenoids.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the lower/piston lockout solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair

If your multimeter tests revealed an open or shorted wire in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring.

  5. Replace Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil fails resistance testing, relieve any hydraulic pressure in the suspension system (ensure the chassis is properly supported). Remove the retaining nut/clip to slide off the faulty solenoid coil, or unscrew the entire lockout solenoid valve cartridge if replacing the whole unit.

  6. Install New Part

Install the new lockout solenoid valve and tighten to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  8. Calibration

Start the tractor and clear the fault codes. You may need to perform a front suspension calibration procedure to ensure the CCM recognizes the new valve's parameters.
