Case IH 10060 – Hitch Controller: Internal controller relay failed or hitch valves shorted to 12 volts

Issue description

The hitch controller contains an internal relay that supplies voltage to the hitch valve solenoids when energized. If the controller senses voltage on the output of this relay when it is not energized, fault code 10060 is recorded. There are two primary failure modes for this condition: 1. The wiring from the controller to the hitch valves is shorted to 12V power when the relay is off. 2. The controller's internal relay has mechanically failed (stuck closed).

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the hitch controller to the hitch valve solenoids for chafing, melted insulation, or exposed wires that could be touching a 12V power source.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the hitch controller and at the hitch valves, then use a digital multimeter to test the valve driver circuits for continuity to 12V power.

  3. If the wiring harness tests completely fine with no shorts to 12V, isolate the controller as the internal relay is likely stuck closed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Access the Hitch Controller

    Locate the hitch controller (location varies by model, often in the right-hand console, armrest, or rear cab electrical panel).

  3. Test and Repair Wiring

    If your multimeter tests in the diagnostic phase revealed a short to 12V in the harness, trace the wire from the controller to the hitch valve solenoids. Repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness segment.

  4. Replace the Controller

    If the wiring is intact, the internal relay has failed. Because the relay is internal and soldered to the controller's circuit board, the entire Hitch Controller module must be replaced.

  5. Re-calibrate

    After installing a new hitch controller, you must use the tractor's monitor or an electronic service tool to perform a Hitch Controller Calibration so the new module can learn the valve thresholds and drop rates.
