Case IH 10061 – Hitch Controller: Hitch Relay or Valve Circuit Failure
Issue description
The Hitch Controller has detected a fault in the circuit supplying voltage to the hitch valve solenoids. This code is logged if the controller senses voltage on the relay output when it is not energized, or if the lift/lower solenoid circuit has failed open or shorted to ground. This indicates a failed internal relay, damaged wiring, or a failed hitch raise/lower solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the Hitch Controller to the hitch valve solenoids for chafing, pinched wires, or broken insulation causing a short or open circuit
Perform a solenoid continuity test by disconnecting the hitch raise and lower solenoids and measuring resistance across the pins (infinite resistance indicates a failed open coil)
Test the relay output voltage at the solenoid connector with the key ON but the hitch not commanded to move (12V present indicates the internal relay is stuck closed)
Repair steps
Secure the machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the hitch or mechanically support it, turn off the engine, and remove the key.
Repair wiring harness
If diagnostics reveal a broken or shorted wire between the controller and hitch valves, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section or replace the affected harness segment.
Replace solenoid coil
If a solenoid tested open, remove the retaining nut on the hitch valve cartridge, slide the old coil off, install the new coil, torque to OEM specs, and reconnect the harness.
Replace Hitch Controller
If wiring and solenoids test perfectly, the internal relay has failed. Disconnect the battery, unplug and unbolt the old controller, and install the new one. A hitch calibration via the display monitor or dealer tool will be required.
Clear codes and test
Reconnect the battery, clear inactive fault codes from the instrument cluster, and test the hitch raise/lower functions to verify the repair.
