Case IH 10083 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Transmission Controller Failure - Internal Short in the Transmission Neutral Latch Relay Coil

Issue description

The transmission controller has commanded the neutral latch relay coil driver to the OFF position, but the controller is still sensing current flowing through the driver circuit. This indicates an internal short circuit within the controller's driver.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Magnum (MX / TG series)
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac series

Check the cause

  1. Retrieve, record, and clear the fault codes using the tractor's display or a diagnostic service tool, then cycle the key to see if the code returns immediately.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the neutral latch relay for chafed wires shorting to a 12V power source.

  3. Remove and test the transmission neutral latch relay coil for an internal short that could have overloaded the controller's internal driver.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the Controller

Access the transmission controller (location varies by model, typically found under the side console or behind the cab trim panels).

  3. Remove the Module

Carefully unplug the multi-pin wiring harness connectors from the transmission controller. Remove the mounting hardware and extract the failed module.

  4. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement transmission controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  5. Reconnect Power

    Reconnect the battery.

  6. Configuration and Calibration

A new transmission controller will be blank or unconfigured. You must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to configure the controller for your specific tractor model, tire size, and options.

  7. Transmission Calibration

Once configured, perform a full transmission calibration (clutch fill calibration) to ensure smooth shifting and proper operation.
