Case IH 1009 – Hitch Controller / Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Both external switches operated at the same time

This code triggers when the controller receives simultaneous 'Up' and 'Down' command signals from the external fender-mounted hitch control switches. This condition is typically caused by a physically stuck button, an internal short circuit within the switch assembly, or a short in the wiring harness connecting the switch to the controller.

   Visually inspect the external fender-mounted hitch switches for buttons that are physically jammed, packed with mud/debris, or damaged from impact.

   Perform a disconnect test by unplugging the electrical connector from the external switches and turning the key on. If the 1009 code changes to an open-circuit code or disappears, the switch is internally shorted.

   Perform a multimeter continuity test on the disconnected switch pins. Continuity should only exist when a button is actively pressed; constant continuity indicates a failed switch.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the fender to the EDC controller for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation that could cause the 'up' and 'down' signal wires to short together.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the faulty external hitch switch on the rear fender extension. Clean the surrounding area to prevent dirt from falling into the electrical connector.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the weather-sealed electrical connector from the back of the switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Depress the retaining clips or remove the mounting screws holding the switch housing to the fender panel, and pull the switch out.

   Install the New Part

   Snap or screw the new replacement switch into the fender housing.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back in. Ensure the weather-pack seal is fully seated to prevent moisture from corroding the new contacts.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic checks pointed to the harness rather than the switch, trace the harness to the shorted section. Cut out the damaged wire, solder in a new section, and seal it with marine-grade heat-shrink tubing.

   Test

   Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes from the EDC module, and test the hitch operation using both the in-cab controls and the newly repaired external fender switches.
