Case IH 1009 - UCM – UCM (Universal Control Module) or Hitch / EDC (Electronic Draft Control) Controller: Both external switches operated at the same time

The system has detected that the two external fender-mounted hitch control switches (Raise and Lower) are sending an active signal simultaneously, or were both active the moment the key was turned on. Because pressing both switches at the same time is an invalid command, the controller disables the external hitch operation for safety and logs this fault.

   Visually inspect the external Raise/Lower hitch switches on the rear fenders to see if either is physically jammed, packed with mud/debris, or frozen in the depressed position.

   Perform a disconnect test: Turn the key OFF, disconnect the wiring harness from both external fender switches, and turn the key back ON. If the 1009 code goes away or changes to an open circuit code, one of the switches is internally shorted.

   Perform a multimeter continuity test on the disconnected switches. They should be normally open; if a switch shows continuity without being pressed, it has failed internally and must be replaced.

   If the code remains active even when the switches are unplugged, inspect the wiring harness running from the fenders to the UCM/Hitch controller. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or corrosion inside the connectors causing a cross-short or short-to-voltage.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the faulty external hitch switch on the rear fender. Clean the surrounding area to prevent dirt from falling into the wiring connector.

   Remove the Switch

   Depending on the fender style, either pry the switch out of its bezel using a plastic trim tool, or reach behind the fender lip to squeeze the retaining tabs and push the switch outward.

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the back of the switch. Check the connector for green corrosion or moisture. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Install New Part

   Plug the wiring harness into the new switch. Push the new switch firmly into the fender housing until the retaining clips click into place.

   Verify Operation

   Turn the key ON. Verify that the 1009 fault code is now inactive. Test the external hitch raise and lower functions to ensure proper operation. Clear the stored fault code using the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic menu or the EST (Electronic Service Tool) software.
