Case IH 1010 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller (ISM-DI): Battery 5V Reference 1 Circuit Low
Issue description
The engine controller supplies a steady 5-volt reference signal to power various engine sensors. A "Circuit Low" condition means the voltage on this specific circuit has dropped below the minimum acceptable range. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor pulling the circuit voltage down, or an internal failure of the engine controller's analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

Check the cause
Check the ECU Output: Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the Engine Controller. Turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to measure the voltage directly at the ECU pins for the 5V Reference 1 circuit.
Isolate the Harness/Sensors (Sensor short cause): If the ECU outputs a steady 5V with the harness disconnected, the ECU is functioning properly. Reconnect the harness and disconnect the sensors on the Reference 1 circuit one at a time. If the 5V reference returns to normal when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Inspect the Wiring (Wiring short cause): If unplugging the sensors does not restore the 5V signal, inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or bare spots shorting to the machine's chassis/ground.
Verify ECU Failure (Internal ADC failure cause): If the ECU does not output 5V even with the harness completely disconnected, the engine controller has suffered an internal ADC failure and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.
Locate the ISM-DI Engine Controller.
Carefully release the locking tabs and disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU.
Remove the mounting hardware securing the ECU to the machine and remove the faulty module.
Install the new Engine Controller and secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Follow The Appropriate Service Tool Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters. The machine will not operate correctly until the new ECU is programmed and synced.
