Case IH 1011 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / ISM-DI (Engine): Battery 5V Reference 1 Circuit High

Issue description

The engine controller has detected a voltage on the 5-volt reference 1 circuit that is higher than the expected 5 volts. This typically means the reference wire is shorted to a higher voltage source (such as the 12V battery power) or a sensor on that circuit has failed internally and is shorting the circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a voltage test using a multimeter to measure the voltage at the 5V reference pin on the affected engine sensors with the key ON, engine OFF. If it reads battery voltage (e.g., 12V), a short to power is confirmed.

  2. Isolate sensors by disconnecting those that share the 5V Reference 1 circuit one at a time. If the voltage drops back to a normal 5V (or the active fault changes to a 'Circuit Low/Open' code) after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause the 5V wire to touch a 12V power supply wire.

  4. Inspect the connectors at the Engine Controller for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion that could bridge a 12V pin to the 5V reference pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any invasive harness repairs.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the source of the short to power.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the wiring harness is chafed and shorting to a 12V source, cut out the damaged section of the wire. Solder and heat-shrink a new section of wire to restore the circuit, ensuring it is routed away from hot or vibrating engine components.

  4. Replace Sensor

    If unplugging a specific sensor resolved the high voltage condition, replace that sensor.

  5. Replace ECU

    If the signal remains above the maximum range and the wiring harness and sensors test perfectly fine, the Engine Controller itself has suffered an internal short and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
