Case IH 1011 – Hitch: TCU (Tractor Controller Unit) is disconnected from the CAN bus

The CAN bus relies on a continuous loop of communication between modules. To prevent signal reflection and data noise, the circuit utilizes terminators (120-ohm resistors) at each end. If a terminator fails, breaks, or falls off, the resistance of the CAN bus changes, causing communication to drop out and triggering this fault code.

   Measure CAN Bus Resistance: With the tractor off, use a multimeter to measure resistance between the yellow CAN-High and green CAN-Low wires. ~60 ohms is healthy, 120 ohms indicates a failed/missing terminator, and Open (infinite) indicates a severed wire.

   Swap Test: If a specific terminator is suspected to have failed, swap it with a known good terminator from another implement or circuit to see if communication returns.

   Check Grounds: Inspect the clean ground for the ICU (often a ground strap located above the batteries connecting to the cab mount). Ensure all battery and cab grounds are clean, tight, and free of cracks.

   Inspect Wiring: Check for places where the wiring harness may have rubbed through under the cab.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground cable to protect the network.

   Locate the Terminators

   There are typically two main terminators on the tractor's primary CAN circuit. One is usually located at the front of the tractor (often under the air filter), and the other is at the rear, behind the controllers/hitch area.

   Remove the Faulty Terminator

   Unplug the failed terminator from the wiring harness.

   Install the Upgrade (If Applicable)

   Older Case IH tractors used square 4-pin active/passive terminators that were highly prone to failure. If upgrading to the new cap style, plug the OEM adapter harness into the tractor's square plug, then plug the new triangular terminator into the adapter.

   Secure the Terminator

   Because terminators can crack under heavy tractor vibration, it is highly recommended to secure the new terminator to the harness with a zip-tie.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic display to clear the fault codes. Verify that the Hitch and TCU modules are back online.
