Case IH 1012 – Engine Controller: Battery 5V Reference 2 Circuit Low
Issue description
The voltage on the "5V Reference 2" circuit has dropped below the acceptable lower limit (typically near 0V). This condition is almost always caused by a short to ground in the engine wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor on that specific 5V circuit, or an internal failure within the engine controller itself.

Check the cause
Verify System Voltage: Ensure the battery and overall system voltage are within normal operating ranges, as low system voltage can sometimes trigger reference voltage faults.
Sensor Isolation Test: Identify all sensors sharing the 5V Reference 2 circuit. Disconnect these sensors one by one while monitoring the 5V reference voltage with a multimeter. If the voltage returns to 5V when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.
Harness Inspection: If unplugging the sensors does not restore the 5V signal, use a multimeter to check the 5V reference wire for continuity to ground. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper rubbing against the engine block or chassis.
ECM Pin Check: Disconnect the harness from the ECM and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Ensure the machine is powered down before beginning repairs.
If a sensor is shorted: Replace the specific sensor identified during the isolation test.
Replace the internally shorted sensor that was pulling the 5V reference circuit low.
If the wiring is shorted: Locate the damaged section of the harness and repair or replace it.
Repair the wires using proper splicing and heat-shrink techniques. If the harness is severely melted or damaged, replace the entire engine wiring harness section.
If the ECM is faulty: Replace the ECM.
If the wiring tests perfectly and all sensors are unplugged, but the ECM is still not outputting 5V on the reference pin, the Engine Control Module has failed internally and must be replaced.
Reconnect the battery and all sensors.
Restore all electrical connections.
Connect a diagnostic service tool to clear the stored fault codes.
Use a tool such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest to clear the codes.
Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and the machine operates normally.
Confirm the repair was successful.
