1013

Case IH 1013 – Hitch: No communication with the ICP (Instrument Cluster Panel)

Issue description

CAN bus communication failure where the module logging the code has lost its data link with the tractor's dashboard/instrument cluster.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Maxxum and Puma series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the Instrument Cluster Panel is receiving proper battery voltage and has a solid ground. Check all cab and instrumentation fuses.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running between the Hitch controller and the ICP for chafing, pinched wires, or rodent damage.

  3. Disconnect the plugs at both the ICP and the Hitch controller. Inspect for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  4. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity. Verify the standard CAN bus terminating resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network when powered down) to ensure the data link is intact.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Modules

Remove the necessary dash trim to access the rear of the Instrument Cluster Panel. Locate the Hitch controller.

  3. Clean and Re-seat

Apply electrical contact cleaner to the harness connectors at both the ICP and the Hitch controller. Reconnect them, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  4. Repair Wiring

If continuity tests failed during diagnostics, repair the broken CAN wires or replace the damaged section of the harness.

  5. Component Replacement

If the wiring, power, and ground are all verified as good, the communication failure is likely due to an internal fault in the Instrument Cluster Panel (or, less commonly, the Hitch controller). Replace the ICP.

  6. Test and Clear

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the Hitch 1013 code. Verify that the hitch controls now communicate properly with the dash display.
