Case IH 1015 – INST or INST2 (Instrument Panel Controller): Seat Switch may be stuck closed

The operator presence switch (seat safety switch) is continuously sending a "closed" (operator present) signal to the controller. This typically means the switch is mechanically stuck in the depressed position, internally shorted, or there is a short in the wiring harness keeping the circuit closed.

   Electronic Service Tool (EST) Monitor: Connect the diagnostic service tool. Navigate to the monitor screen and click the button for 'CHANGE PARAMETER SELECTIONS'. Select 'SEAT OPERATOR PRESENT SW' from the parameter list. Monitor the switch status while physically sitting in and getting out of the seat to see if the state changes.

   Wiring Inspection: If the service tool shows the switch is always closed, disconnect the seat switch. If the status changes to open, the switch is faulty. If it remains closed, check the wiring harness from the instrumentation controller (INST) to the seat switch for a short to ground or short to power.

   Physical Inspection: Inspect the seat suspension and cushion area for debris, dirt, or mechanical binding that might be physically holding the switch down.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the operator presence switch, which is typically mounted under the bottom seat cushion or integrated into the seat suspension base.

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the wire harness connector from the seat switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Remove any zip ties, switch bay covers, retaining clips, or rivets holding the switch assembly in place. Pull the faulty switch out.

   Install New Switch

   Seat the new switch into the contact plate/bracket and secure it using the provided hardware (spring studs, rivets, or clips).

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the INST 1015 fault code. Sit in the seat and stand up to verify the code does not return and the machine recognizes the operator's presence correctly.
