Case IH 1016 – PTO Controller: PTO ON switch wire connection from Armrest to PTO failed Open Circuit

The PTO Controller detects an open circuit (a broken wire, disconnected plug, or failed switch contact) on the direct hardwired connection coming from the Armrest Controller.

   Verify if the PTO switch feels mechanically sound, as an internal failure can cause an open circuit reading.

   Inspect the connectors at the PTO switch and the Armrest Controller under the right-hand armrest console for loose, backed-out, or corroded pins.

   Locate the PTO Controller and inspect its main harness connector for moisture, dirt, or damaged pins.

   Perform a continuity test using a multimeter on the dedicated PTO ON signal wire running from the Armrest Controller harness to the PTO Controller harness to check for infinite resistance (OL).

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand armrest control panel to expose the underside of the switches and the Armrest Controller.

   Test the Switch

   Disconnect the PTO switch. Use a multimeter to test for continuity across the switch terminals when toggled to the "ON" position. If there is no continuity, the switch has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Trace the Harness

   If the switch is functioning, trace the wiring harness from the armrest down to the cab floor and out to the PTO Controller.

   Repair the Open Circuit

   Once the break or pinch in the wire is located (commonly found at pivot points, cab pass-throughs, or near the controller connectors), cut out the damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-resistant, heat-shrink butt connectors.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all harnesses and reinstall the armrest panel. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the inactive fault codes from the instrument cluster.

   Operational Test

   Start the tractor and engage the PTO to verify the code does not return and the PTO operates normally.
