Case IH 1017 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Armrest Controller (ARU): Hitch Position Command Potentiometer Failure

The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) monitors the operator's desired rear hitch position via a rotary potentiometer located in the cab's armrest control panel. This code triggers when the Position Command value received over the CAN data bus from the armrest indicates that the potentiometer's signal is outside of its normal operating voltage range, suggesting an open circuit, a short circuit, or a mechanical disconnection.

   Inspect the physical hitch command lever/dial in the armrest for mechanical play; tighten the lever on the shaft if loose

   Disconnect the 3-pin wiring harness at the potentiometer and inspect for pushed pins, corrosion, or moisture

   Check the harness for open circuits or short circuits to ground/power between the armrest controller and the sensor

   Verify that the potentiometer is receiving a steady 5-volt reference signal from the controller

   Attempt to run a Hitch Position Command Calibration, as the controller memory may have lost the calibration

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during service.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the armrest control console to access the underside of the hitch position command lever/dial.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Disconnect the 3-pin weather-proof wiring harness connector from the potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the console bracket and slide the sensor off the lever shaft.

   Install the New Sensor

   Slide the new potentiometer onto the shaft, ensuring the internal wiper aligns correctly with the lever's mechanical sweep. Secure the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 3-pin wiring harness back into the new sensor and reassemble the armrest console.

   Recalibrate

   Reconnect the battery. You must perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration / Hitch Position Command Calibration via the tractor's in-cab display monitor or by using an electronic diagnostic tool to map the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage limits to the physical lever stops.
