Case IH 1017 – XCM (Multi-function Control Module): Left-hand load sensing pin - signal too high
Issue description
The voltage signal returning from the left-hand draft load sensing pin on the 3-point hitch is exceeding the normal operating parameters (often greater than 8 Volts). This indicates a short to a +12V power source, a wiring harness issue, or an internal short/failure within the load sensing pin itself.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Maxxum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series (130, 140, 145, 160, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, CVX, Tier 4)
- Magnum Series (71, 72, 89, 92, 93 series, 7110, 7240, 8950, 215-380)
- MX / Maxxum / CX Series (MX100 to MX170, MX80C, MX90C)
- Steiger Series
- T8 Series
Check the cause
Verify Active Status: Ensure the fault code is currently active and not just a stored historical code.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the chassis harness and the triangular weather-pack connectors leading to the left-hand lower linkage pin. Look for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or corrosion that could cause a short to +12V.
Check 8V Reference Voltage: Verify the reference voltage to the pin. If the reference voltage itself is too high, the system will likely also throw Code 1020.
Swap Test: If the left and right load sensing pins are identical, swap them. If the fault changes to Code 1015, the pin is internally shorted and must be replaced. If the code remains 1017, the issue is in the wiring harness or the XCM.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the XCM.
Remove the Defective Pin
Locate the left-hand draft load sensing pin on the lower linkage of the 3-point hitch. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining hardware, and slide the pin out of the casting.
Install the Replacement
Insert the new OEM load sensing pin (or an elimination kit module) and secure it with the retaining hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Access the controller menu (HC menu) to erase stored error codes.
Perform Autocalibration
Perform the hydraulic lift calibration procedure so the XCM can learn the baseline voltage of the new pin. This is crucial to prevent Code 1024.
