Case IH 1018 – Hitch Controller: Hitch rockshaft position potentiometer open/short/misadjust or circuit failure

Issue description

The Electronic Draft Control (EDC) position sensor located on the hitch rockshaft is misadjusted, worn, contaminated, or experiencing a circuit failure (open or short). When this code is active, the hitch may not raise or lower correctly, or it may fail to respond to commands entirely.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum 7200 Series (7210, 7220, 7230, 7240, 7250)
  • Case IH Magnum 8900 Series (8910, 8920, 8930, 8940, 8950)
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH MX Series
  • Case IH TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Resistance Test: Unplug the hitch rockshaft position potentiometer and measure the resistance across pins A to C. It should read 1,000 ohms ± 10%.

  2. Mechanical Check: Verify that the mechanical travel (rotation) of the potentiometer is capable of a full 360 degrees without binding.

  3. Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the potentiometer and the Hitch Controller for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to 12V power.

  4. Visual Inspection: Check the sensor for physical wear, misadjustment, or heavy contamination (dirt/moisture) that could skew the readings.

Repair steps

  1. Locate potentiometer

Locate the rockshaft position potentiometer on the rear hitch assembly.

  2. Inspect connector

Disconnect the electrical connector and inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.

  3. Test resistance

Perform the resistance test (1,000 ohms ± 10% on pins A to C).

  4. Remove faulty sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the resistance test, is physically damaged, or is heavily contaminated, remove the mounting hardware and extract the faulty potentiometer.

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the replacement potentiometer.

  6. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Calibrate sensor

Calibrate the new potentiometer via the tractor's diagnostic display or Electronic Service Tool to ensure the controller recognizes the new sensor's base voltage and travel limits.

  8. Test operation

Clear the fault codes and test the hitch operation (raise/lower) to confirm the repair.
