1018 - UCM

Case IH 1018 - UCM – UCM / XCM: Both load sensing pins disconnected

Issue description

The central controller has detected an open circuit or complete loss of communication from both of the draft load sensing pins. These pins are critical components of the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) system, which monitors the mechanical load on the 3-point hitch lower link arms to automatically adjust implement depth.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series (7100, 7200, 8900, MX180-MX275, 215-340)
  • Puma Series (140-210)
  • Maxxum / MX Series (MX80C-MX170, MXM 120-190)
  • CX Series (CX50-CX100)
  • Steiger Series
  • Farmall (CVT) Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect both load sensing pin connectors (C048 and C047) to ensure they are securely connected, free of dirt or corrosion, and that internal pins are not bent or pushed out of position.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the draft pins to the UCM/XCM for continuity, chafing, or breaks.

  3. Verify the 8V reference voltage to the pins (codes 1019 and 1020 often accompany 1018 if the reference voltage is shorted or out of range).

  4. If the wiring and pins test fine, check the central controller (XCM) itself for faults.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If a break or damaged connector is found during diagnostics, repair the harness or splice in a new connector pigtail.

  2. Replace the Pins

If the wiring is intact but the sensors have failed internally, remove the lower link arms, extract the faulty draft pins, and install the new load sensing pins.

  3. Alternative (Bypass)

If the tractor is used for applications where draft sensing is not required (e.g., pulling a grain cart or running a PTO implement), install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit to trick the UCM into thinking the pins are functioning, permanently disabling the draft sensing feature.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the repair or bypass is complete, clear the error code from the UCM.

  5. Calibrate

Test the system for normal operation and perform the hydraulic lift auto-calibration procedure (often indicated by code 1024) to reset the EDC system parameters.
