Case IH 1019 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Armrest Controller Module (ACM): Upper limit potentiometer failure

The Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Hitch Controller has received a signal over the CAN data bus from the Armrest Controller Module (ACM) indicating that the potentiometer responsible for setting the 3-point hitch's upper lift limit is returning an out-of-range voltage (either a short circuit, open circuit, or erratic signal). Hitch functionality may be restricted or disabled to prevent mechanical damage.

   Check for accompanying CAN bus communication codes (such as 1012 or 12011). If present, the issue is likely CAN bus wiring rather than the potentiometer.

   Inspect the armrest controller connector and the TCU connectors. Ensure the connectors are seated tightly, not damaged, and that no pins are pushed back or corroded.

   Test the upper limit potentiometer resistance using a multimeter. Older Magnum manuals specify 10,000 ohms (± 10%) across pins A to C, while others use a 1,000-ohm potentiometer. Check for a smooth change in resistance as the dial is turned.

   Verify that the potentiometer is receiving a steady 5-volt reference signal and has a good ground from the armrest controller.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws and carefully lift the cover of the armrest control console to expose the internal wiring and the back of the hitch control dials.

   Disconnect and Remove

   Unplug the electrical connector specifically routed to the Upper Limit potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut holding the potentiometer to the console plastic.

   Test or Replace

   If the potentiometer failed the diagnostic resistance/sweep test, discard it. If it passed, you must trace the wiring harness between the armrest and the TCU for a short or break and repair the wire as necessary.

   Install New Component

   Insert the new potentiometer into the armrest panel, secure it with the retaining nut, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassemble and Power Up

   Reinstall the armrest cover. Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition key to the ON position.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Use the tractor's diagnostic display or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 1019 fault code. You may need to perform a hitch calibration procedure (Electronic Draft Control calibration) so the TCU can learn the new potentiometer's exact voltage limits.
