Case IH 1020 – Armrest Controller: Aux remote valve RETRACT LIMIT SET switch is failed
Issue description
The controller is receiving an out-of-range, missing, or illogical electrical signal from the switch used to set the retract limit for the auxiliary hydraulic remote valves.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- MX Magnum Series (e.g., MX180, MX210, MX230, MX255, MX275, MX285)
- TG Series
- Steiger / STX Series (e.g., 280, 330)
Check the cause
Inspect the retract limit set switch on the armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing normal operation.
Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the switch to the Armrest Control Module. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or loose/corroded connector pins.
Using a multimeter, verify that the switch has continuity when pressed and breaks continuity when released (or vice versa). Check that the switch is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V) and has a solid ground.
Check for related code 1010 (EXTEND LIMIT SET switch failure). If both are present, it highly suggests a shared wiring issue (like a shared ground or voltage supply drop) rather than a dual switch failure.
Attempt to clear the fault codes and perform the auxiliary remote valve calibration procedure via the tractor's performance monitor. A loss of calibration data can sometimes trigger switch logic errors.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts and CAN-bus spikes.
Disassemble the Armrest
Remove the retaining screws on the underside or perimeter of the armrest console to lift off the top cover.
Locate the Switch
Locate the auxiliary remote valve limit set switch assembly within the switch bank.
Disconnect
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch.
Remove the Switch
Depress the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws holding the switch into the armrest bezel, and pull the switch out. (Note: On some Armrest Control Modules, these switches are soldered directly to the circuit board. If this is the case, the entire Armrest Control Module must be replaced or sent to a specialist for board-level repair).
Install the New Part
Snap or screw the new switch into the bezel and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reassemble
Reinstall the armrest cover and secure all fasteners.
Restore Power & Calibrate
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes. You must navigate to the tractor's display monitor to recalibrate the auxiliary remote levers and limit settings before operating the hydraulics.
