Case IH 1020 – HITCH Controller: Hitch Slip Select Switch failed in the Armrest controller

Issue description

The Tractor CAN Data Bus has signaled that the slip select switch has failed. The hitch controller receives this fault signal directly from the armrest controller, indicating either a physical failure of the slip select switch (SW202) or a software execution error within the armrest controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • STX Steiger Series
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the physical movement of the Hitch Slip Select Switch (SW202) through all 3 positions: Position A (OFF), Position B (Center / Slip select), and Position C (Momentary / Slip set).

  2. Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic system (accessed via the 'H' menu mode routine using diagnostic test switch tool 380000843 in connector X030) or an electronic service tool to monitor the switch status.

  3. Turn the switch through its positions and watch the status change on the display. If the status display matches the switch changes, the switch and wiring are OK, pointing to a potential software execution error in the armrest controller.

  4. If the status display does not match the switch changes, test the switch for continuity with a multimeter.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the switch and the armrest controller board for opens, shorts, or loose connector pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working inside the armrest.

  2. Access the Armrest

Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand multifunction armrest console to lift the cover and access the internal switch clusters and the Armrest Controller (ARU) board.

  3. Locate SW202

Locate the Hitch Slip Select Switch (SW202) and disconnect its wiring pigtail from the main armrest harness.

  4. Replace the Switch

If the switch failed the continuity test, pop the faulty switch out of its mounting bezel and snap the replacement switch into place.

  5. Reassemble

Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector locks securely. Reinstall the armrest console cover.

  6. Software/Controller Replacement

If the switch and wiring tested perfectly during diagnostics, the Armrest Controller itself is experiencing a software execution error. It will need to be re-flashed with updated software by a dealer or replaced entirely.

  7. Clear Codes & Calibrate

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes. You may need to perform an Armrest Controller Calibration via the tractor's display menu to ensure the new switch is recognized.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Hitch Slip Select Switch / EDC Slip Limit Control Switch

    87414327

Depending on the exact model year and cab configuration.

  • Switch, Remote Three Point Hitch

    382247A1

Depending on the exact model year and cab configuration.

  • Armrest Controller Unit

Part numbers vary heavily by tractor serial number. Only replace if the switch and wiring test good but the code persists due to a software/hardware execution error.
