Case IH 1020 – XCM (Multi-function Control Module) or EDC (Electronic Draft Control) / Hitch Controller: Load sensing pin 8V reference - voltage too high
Issue description
The draft load sensing pins rely on a steady 8-volt reference signal from the controller. This code triggers when the controller detects that the voltage on this reference circuit has exceeded the acceptable 8V threshold, typically caused by the 8V circuit shorting to a higher voltage source in the harness, or an internal failure of the controller's voltage regulator.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the XCM/EDC controller to the lower link draft load sensing pins for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a 12V source.
Perform a voltage drop test: Disconnect the harness at the load sensing pins, turn the key on, and measure the voltage at the 8V reference pin on the harness connector. If voltage is 12V, the short is in the harness or controller. If it returns to 8V, the pin is internally shorted.
Perform a controller output test: Disconnect the hitch harness directly at the XCM/EDC module and test the 8V reference output pin. If it outputs significantly more than 8V with nothing attached, the controller has an internal regulator failure.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical repairs.
Repair or replace harness
If the harness is shorted: Repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness where the 8V wire is touching a 12V source.
Replace controller
If the controller is faulty: Replace the XCM/EDC module. Note: Replacing the module or repairing the circuit will often require you to perform a hydraulic lift calibration afterward (which clears the related secondary fault code 1024).
Replace load sensing pins (Option A)
If the load sensing pins are internally shorted (Full Repair): Replace the defective draft load sensing pins with new OEM pins. Reconnect the harness and clear the codes.
Install elimination kit (Option B)
If the load sensing pins are internally shorted (Bypass/Elimination): Install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit. Unplug the defective pins, plug the elimination modules directly into the harness connectors, and secure them with zip ties to permanently disable draft sensing and prevent the 1020 fault code from returning.
