Case IH 1021 – Armrest Controller (ARM) or Tractor Management Function (TMF) / Hitch Controller: Load command potentiometer failure

The controller has detected that the voltage signal from the hitch load/draft command potentiometer is outside of its normal operating range. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground (signal too low), or a short to a +12V power source (signal too high).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the load command potentiometer and the Armrest/TMF controller. Ensure connectors are fully seated, undamaged, and pins are tight and in the correct position.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the potentiometer is receiving the correct 5-volt reference signal and has a solid ground from the controller.

   Disconnect the potentiometer and the controller. Check the signal wire for continuity, and test the signal wire for a short to ground or a short to +12V.

   Measure the resistance of the potentiometer while slowly turning the dial. The resistance should change smoothly without any dropouts or dead spots.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

   Access the Console

   Carefully remove the trim panels or cover on the armrest control console to access the underside of the hitch control dials.

   Disconnect

   Locate the hitch load command potentiometer. Unplug its electrical connector.

   Remove

   Pull off the external control knob. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the console bracket and pull the faulty unit out.

   Install

   Insert the new potentiometer into the console, secure it with the retaining hardware, and press the control knob back onto the shaft.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector into the new potentiometer. Reassemble the armrest console panels.

   Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the inactive fault codes. Depending on the exact model, you may need to perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration procedure so the controller can learn the new potentiometer's voltage limits.
