Case IH 1024 – Hitch Controller: Perform the hydraulic lift calibration

Issue description

The electronic hitch control system has lost its calibration parameters, or a related component (like a sensor, valve, or the controller itself) has been replaced or adjusted. The system requires a recalibration procedure to relearn the minimum and maximum travel limits of the rear lift cylinders.

Check the cause

  1. Check for any other active hitch-related fault codes (such as 1025-1028 for position sensor voltage errors, or 1032-1033 for draft control potentiometer errors) and resolve them first.

  2. Inspect the rear hitch wiring harness, position sensors, and draft pins for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

  3. Ensure the 3-point hitch is completely free to move all the way between the lift cylinders' minimum and maximum limits without interference.

  4. Ensure the transmission/hydraulic oil is warmed up to normal operating temperature and the tractor is not moving.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor

    Start the engine, park the tractor on a level surface, and ensure the transmission oil is warm.

  2. Enter calibration mode

    Enter the calibration mode. On many models, this is done by pressing the hitch switch to the MOMENTARY position and releasing it.

  3. Observe diagnostic display

    Watch the diagnostic display. The system will output a code (e.g., '11') asking to verify tractor configuration (such as confirming the presence of an upper limit knob).

  4. Confirm configuration

    Press the hitch switch to the MOMENTARY position and release it again to answer 'yes' to the module's prompt. The diagnostic display should change (e.g., to an '8'), indicating the system is ready to calibrate.

  5. Calibrate limits

    Hold the hitch switch to fully raise the hitch until it mechanically bottoms out at the top limit, then command it to fully lower to the bottom limit. This allows the controller to learn the exact voltage returns from the position potentiometer at both extremes.

  6. Verify completion

    Once the limits are successfully learned, the diagnostic display will return to normal (often displaying '0'), and the 1024 fault code will be erased.
