Case IH 1024 – Hitch Controller: ICU CAN data bus signal lost.

Issue description

The Implement Control Unit (ICU) has lost communication with the rest of the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. The system is unable to send or receive messages from this module, which typically results in a loss of electronic hitch control and related automated functions.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, cuts, or corrosion, paying special attention to wiring under the cab and connectors at the Hitch Controller.

  2. Verify that the Hitch Controller is receiving proper 12V switched power, unswitched power, and has a clean chassis ground.

  3. Using a multimeter, check the voltage on the CAN High (Yellow) and CAN Low (Green) wires (both should read approximately 2.4V to 2.5V).

  4. With the tractor turned off and battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read exactly 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a failed resistor/open circuit, 0 ohms indicates a short).

  5. Disconnect controllers on the CAN network one by one; if communication is restored after unplugging the Hitch Controller, it has an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Module

    Locate the Hitch Controller/ICU (location varies by model, but is typically found under the cab floor, behind the right-hand console, or integrated near the armrest).

  3. Repair Wiring/Terminators

    If diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault or a bad terminating resistor, repair the broken wires using OEM-approved splice kits or replace the CAN termination module.

  4. Replace the Controller

    If power, ground, and CAN bus resistance are all within spec but the module will not communicate, the Hitch Controller has failed internally. Unplug the Deutsch connectors, unbolt the module, and install the replacement unit.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic service tool or DTC eraser to clear the 1024 fault code from the system memory.

  6. Calibration

    Perform a hitch calibration procedure as outlined in the specific model's service manual, as the new controller will need to learn the travel range and drop rate limits of the draft pins and potentiometers.
