Case IH 1026 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Hand Throttle Sensor Is Above Range - Shorted To Power
Issue description
The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the hand throttle potentiometer that exceeds the maximum acceptable threshold (typically over 4.8V or 5.3V for more than 5 seconds). This indicates that the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to a power source, or the sensor has failed internally.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- skid steer
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- SR series
- SV series
- TR series
- SR175
- SV250
- TR320
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the hand throttle sensor and the Instrument Cluster for rubbed, pinched, or melted wires that could be shorting the signal circuit to a 12V or 5V reference wire.
Back-probe the sensor connector with a multimeter to verify the output voltage. If the voltage remains pegged at the reference voltage (e.g., 5V) regardless of the lever position, the potentiometer is internally shorted.
Check the Instrument Cluster / Controller to ensure it is not outputting excessive voltage on the signal return pin.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Sensor
Remove the trim panels on the right-hand console or armrest pod to access the base of the hand throttle lever.
Inspect and Clean
Disconnect the hand throttle sensor harness. Inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or debris.
Repair Wiring
If a short to power is found in the harness, repair the damaged wire and insulate it properly.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact, unbolt the faulty hand throttle potentiometer/sensor from the lever assembly and install the replacement part.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the harness, reassemble the console, and reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the fault codes. Calibrate the throttle potentiometer via the cab display or Electronic Service Tool (EST) so the module can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values.
