Case IH 1027 - UCM – UCM: Lift arm position sensor - voltage too low

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the lift arm position potentiometer to the control module has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold. This underlying condition is typically caused by a short to ground in the signal wire, an open circuit in the 5V reference supply wire, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the chassis wiring harness and connectors running to the rear rockshaft/lift arm position sensor for physical damage, corrosion, or disconnected pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and turn the key to the ON position. Check the reference voltage pin at the connector for a steady 5V reference from the UCM. If it reads 0V, check for a short to ground or an open circuit in the harness.

  3. Verify continuity on the signal wire back to the UCM and ensure the ground circuit is intact (Code 1030 often accompanies ground faults).

  4. Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic 'H Menu' (e.g., H9 Voltmeter) or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live voltage reading of the potentiometer. Manually move the lift arms; if the voltage remains stuck low despite physical movement and the wiring is good, the sensor is internally faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Lower the lift arms completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the engine and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the rotary position sensor (potentiometer), which is mounted on the rear lift arm pivot point / rockshaft support bracket.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining hardware (typically M8 circlips, M4 lock nuts, or M10 bolts) securing the sensor linkage/drive element. Unbolt and remove the faulty potentiometer from the support bracket.

  4. Installation

    Mount the new rotary position sensor to the bracket. Reattach the sensor connecting rod/lever, ensuring the linkage moves freely without binding. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Calibration

    You must recalibrate the EDC system so the UCM can learn the new sensor's voltage limits for the maximum raise and lower positions. Enter the tractor's calibration menu (via the ADIC display / H Menu) and follow the on-screen prompts to set the upper and lower hitch limits.

  6. Testing

    Clear the stored 1027 fault code and test the rear hitch operation through its full range of motion.
