Case IH 1028 – Hitch Controller (EDC): Travel Range potentiometer failure
Issue description
The signal voltage from the travel range potentiometer is outside of normal operating parameters, shorted, or missing. Note: This specific travel range fault does not apply to 4WD (four-wheel drive) tractors.

Check the cause
Check the armrest controller for accompanying fault codes ARM 169 or ARM 79 and address them first
Verify recent calibrations — the hitch travel limit feature can be inadvertently turned on if the armrest hitch configuration is performed while a potentiometer is connected to armrest connector J205
Inspect connector J205 (Hitch load command / Travel range potentiometer) on the armrest controller for tight seating, correct pin position, corrosion, or damage
Test the CAN Bus to verify that the Armrest Controller is properly communicating with the Hitch Controller
Repair steps
Access the Armrest Console
Power down the tractor and open the right-hand armrest console to access the Armrest Controller and the hitch control potentiometers.
Inspect Wiring
Trace the wiring from the travel range potentiometer to connector J205 on the Armrest Controller. Look for pinched wires, shorts to ground, or open circuits.
Test the Potentiometer
Using a multimeter, test the resistance sweep of the travel range potentiometer. The resistance should change smoothly and linearly as the dial is turned. If there are dead spots or infinite resistance (open circuit), the potentiometer has failed internally.
Recalibrate the Hitch (If Potentiometer is Good)
If the wiring and potentiometer test fine, the issue is likely a configuration error. Clear the fault codes and redo the armrest hitch menu calibration procedure. Ensure you follow the exact OEM procedure for your specific 2WD/MFD model, ensuring the travel limit feature is configured correctly.
Replace the Component
If the potentiometer failed the multimeter test, remove the retaining nut/screws holding it in the armrest bezel and install a new potentiometer.
Final Calibration
After installing a new potentiometer, perform the armrest hitch calibration procedure to marry the new sensor values to the controller.
