Case IH 103 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Odd clutch solenoid or its wiring failed open or shorted to ground

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for actuating the odd clutch solenoid. An "open" condition means there is a break in the circuit (e.g., a broken wire, disconnected plug, or burnt-out solenoid coil), while a "short to ground" means a powered wire is touching the machine's chassis or a ground source. This condition prevents the transmission from properly engaging odd-numbered gears.

   Visually inspect the odd clutch solenoid on the powershift valve assembly (Connector No. 29) and the wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or corrosion.

   Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to check the harness for continuity back to the transmission controller (to rule out an open circuit) and to the chassis (to rule out a short to ground).

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the odd clutch solenoid itself to check for an internal open (infinite resistance) or short (zero resistance).

   Verify that the transmission controller is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid connector when the odd clutch is commanded to engage.

   Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic tests reveal a broken or shorted wire in the harness, repair the damaged section using proper weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness segment.

   Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

   If the wiring tests good but the solenoid fails the resistance test, replace the odd clutch solenoid.

   Locate assembly

   Locate the "Powershift Valve Odd/Even" assembly on the transmission housing.

   Disconnect connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector (Connector No. 29) from the odd clutch solenoid.

   Clean area

   Clean the area around the valve to prevent debris from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

   Remove faulty solenoid

   Remove the retaining hardware and carefully extract the faulty solenoid valve.

   Lubricate and install O-rings

   Lubricate the new O-rings with clean transmission fluid and install them on the new solenoid valve.

   Install new solenoid

   Insert the new solenoid into the powershift valve block and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect connector

   Reconnect the electrical connector.

    Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the Transmission Controller and test-drive the tractor to ensure odd gears engage smoothly without throwing the code.
